NEDC Delivers Rescue Boats, Relief Materials to Nguru Riverine Communities in Yobe

‎‎The North East Development Commission (NEDC) on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, distributed critical emergency and rescue equipment, alongside food and non-food relief items, to Garbi community in Nguru Local Government Area and other riverine communities in Yobe State.

‎The intervention follows the tragic canoe mishap that occurred in January 2026, which claimed the lives of passengers travelling from Adiyani community in Guri Local Government Area, Jigawa State to Garbi community in Nguru LGA, Yobe State.

‎Items delivered include life jackets, speed boats equipped with electric hydraulic davits, rescue boats with paddles, water pumps, and toolkits to strengthen emergency response capacity. The Commission also provided food supplies and non-food items such as mats, blankets, and children’s clothing to support affected families and first responders.

‎Speaking during the distribution, the Managing Director/CEO of NEDC, Mohammed G. Alkali, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to partnering with the Yobe State Government under the leadership of Governor Mai Mala Buni to implement both immediate and long-term measures aimed at addressing challenges faced by vulnerable riverine communities.

‎The NEDC Yobe State Coordinator, Ali Ibrahim Abbas, commended the collaboration and support of the Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Mohammed Goje, the Chairman of Nguru LGA, Muhammad Mairami, and other stakeholders for their collective efforts in responding to the needs of the affected communities.
