Borno Government Rolls Out Major Agricultural Intervention
The Borno State Government has launched an ambitious 2026 Wet Farming Season programme aimed at boosting food production, improving food security and strengthening the livelihoods of thousands of rural households across the state.
Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum officially flagged off the statewide farming season in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area, unveiling the sale of 200 truckloads of NPK fertiliser at a 50 percent subsidised rate. The programme also includes the free distribution of agricultural inputs and equipment to over 120,000 smallholder farmers.
The intervention forms part of the state’s broader agricultural development strategy designed to enhance productivity, create jobs, reduce poverty and promote sustainable economic growth.
200 Truckloads of Subsidised Fertiliser for Farmers
Addressing farmers, traditional rulers and government officials during the launch, Governor Zulum disclosed that the state procured 200 truckloads of high-quality NPK fertiliser, representing a significant increase from the 75 truckloads distributed during the previous farming season.
According to the governor, farmers will purchase the fertiliser at only half of the prevailing market price, making the essential farming input more affordable amid rising production costs.
He stressed that the fertiliser subsidy demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring farmers have adequate support to increase agricultural output and guarantee food availability across Borno State.
120,000 Farmers to Receive Free Agricultural Inputs
Beyond fertiliser, the government announced the free distribution of several essential farm inputs to over 120,000 profiled farmers throughout the state.
The intervention package includes:
40,000 litres of agrochemicals
5,000 water pumps
5,000 knapsack sprayers
10,000 bicycles
Certified improved seeds
Post-harvest storage facilities
The government said the initiative covers the entire agricultural value chain, from land preparation and crop production to harvesting, storage, processing and market access.
10,000 Bicycles to Improve Rural Farming
Governor Zulum also launched the distribution of 10,000 bicycles to improve transportation for rural farmers.
The bicycles are expected to ease movement between farms and communities, reduce transportation challenges and enhance access to markets.
In addition, newly introduced post-harvest storage facilities will help farmers preserve harvested crops, minimise post-harvest losses and improve food quality.
Government Targets Food Security and Job Creation
Governor Zulum explained that the comprehensive agricultural support programme is designed to strengthen food and nutrition security while expanding employment opportunities for women, youths and farming communities.
The programme includes mechanisation services, irrigation development, fertiliser distribution, improved seeds, agrochemicals, extension services, harvesting support, agricultural financing, agro-processing facilities and market access initiatives.
He noted that agriculture remains one of the strongest pillars for economic recovery and sustainable development in Borno State.
Warning Against Diversion of Fertiliser
The governor warned beneficiaries against diverting or reselling the subsidised fertiliser.
He emphasised that the fertiliser was strictly intended for crop production and urged farmers to use the inputs responsibly to maximise agricultural productivity.
According to him, anyone found diverting government-subsidised agricultural inputs would face appropriate sanctions.
₦500 Million Cash Support for Vulnerable Residents
In addition to the farming intervention, Governor Zulum announced a ₦500 million livelihood support package for vulnerable persons, women and youths across five local government areas.
The beneficiaries will come from Biu, Hawul, Kwaya Kusar, Shani and Bayo.
The cash intervention is expected to stimulate local economic activities, improve household incomes and support vulnerable families.
Commissioner Highlights Agricultural Investments
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Bawu Musami, said Borno is gradually emerging as one of Nigeria’s leading agricultural states due to consistent government investment.
He listed several interventions implemented under Governor Zulum’s administration, including subsidised fertiliser programmes, mechanised farming services, irrigation infrastructure, extension services, solar-powered water pumps, improved seeds, agrochemicals and post-harvest processing facilities.
According to him, the sustained investment is positioning agriculture as a major driver of economic development in the state.
Ndume Calls for Revival of Agricultural Show
Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Mohammed Ali Ndume, called for the revival of Borno State’s annual agricultural show.
He said the event would provide farmers with opportunities to showcase agricultural produce, exchange ideas, attract investors and promote innovation within the agricultural sector.

The ceremony attracted prominent government officials, traditional rulers and political leaders, including former Deputy Governor Hon. Usman Mamman Durkwa, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, the Emir of Biu, Alhaji (Dr.) Mustapha Umar Mustapha II, the Emir of Shani, Alhaji Nasiru Muhammadu Mailafiya, APC State Chairman Hon. Bello Ayuba, commissioners, lawmakers, local government chairmen, heads of government agencies and other stakeholders.
