Dr Mohammed Goni Alkali Leads NEDC’s New Push for Expansion, Investment and Sustainable Growth

‎
‎
‎The North-East Development Commission (NEDC), under the leadership of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mohammed Goni Alkali, is advancing a new phase of regional transformation as it moves from post-conflict recovery and stabilisation to expansion, sustainable growth and long-term economic prosperity.
‎
‎The new phase, anchored on the North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP), is designed to unlock the vast economic potential of the North-East through strategic investments in industrialisation, regional connectivity, energy security, enterprise development and human capital. It also seeks to create an enabling environment for private sector participation, attract investments and establish a sustainable foundation for inclusive economic growth.
‎
‎At the heart of this development agenda are the 11 strategic pillars of the NESDMP, which provide the framework for the Commission’s interventions and long-term vision for the region. These pillars are:
‎
‎1. Peaceful Society
‎2. Leadership in Agriculture
‎3. Healthy Citizens
‎4. Purposeful Infrastructure
‎5. Productive Entrepreneurs
‎6. Educated Populace
‎7. Protected Environment
‎8. Industrialisation
‎9. Flourishing Trade
‎10. Memorable Experience
‎11. A Connected Region
‎
‎Together, these pillars reflect a comprehensive development approach that seeks to address the region’s security, economic, social, environmental and infrastructural challenges while creating opportunities for sustainable growth and prosperity.
‎
‎This strategic direction signals a significant shift in the Commission’s development priorities—from rebuilding communities and infrastructure affected by years of conflict to creating a competitive, productive and investment-ready regional economy.
‎
‎As captured in the Commission’s development vision, “The North-East is no longer defined by its past, but by the promise of its future. We are moving from recovery, renewal and stabilisation to development, from recovery to prosperity.”
‎
‎The vision underscores NEDC’s determination to reposition the region as a peaceful, economically vibrant and productive part of Nigeria, where infrastructure, human capital, enterprise and investment opportunities combine to drive sustainable development.
‎
‎In furtherance of this commitment, the Governing Board of the North-East Development Commission has approved a historic package of strategic investments aimed at accelerating the implementation of the NESDMP and complementing the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
‎
‎The approvals represent one of the Commission’s most ambitious development investment packages to date, covering critical sectors such as renewable energy, transportation, electric mobility, infrastructure, enterprise development, education, healthcare and strategic partnerships.
‎
‎These investments are expected to strengthen the economic foundations of the six North-East states—Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe—by addressing critical development gaps, expanding productive capacity, improving access to essential services and opening new opportunities for businesses, investors and communities.
‎
‎Beyond the immediate benefits of individual projects, the strategic investment package reflects a broader ambition to establish an integrated regional economy in which improved infrastructure facilitates trade, reliable energy supports industrial production, transportation connects markets, and enterprise development creates jobs and sustainable livelihoods.
‎
‎The Commission’s renewed focus also recognises the importance of private sector participation as a catalyst for economic expansion. By improving the investment climate and strengthening strategic partnerships, NEDC is positioning the North-East to attract private capital, encourage innovation and unlock opportunities across its agricultural, industrial, commercial and service sectors.
‎
‎Under Dr Mohammed Goni Alkali’s leadership, the Commission is therefore consolidating the gains of its stabilisation and recovery interventions while laying the groundwork for a more ambitious development agenda.
‎
‎Ultimately, the transition to expansion and sustainable growth represents more than a change in development priorities. It is a deliberate commitment to building a region where peace creates opportunities, infrastructure drives productivity, investment stimulates enterprise and economic growth translates into improved living standards.
‎
‎Through the implementation of the NESDMP and its strategic investment programme, NEDC is pursuing a clear destination: a peaceful, connected, prosperous and economically competitive North-East that contributes meaningfully to Nigeria’s national development, stability and regional integration.
‎
‎From Recovery to Prosperity: NEDC is laying the foundation for the North-East’s next chapter of sustainable growth and economic transformation.
