The Federal Government has announced plans to deploy solar-powered streetlights and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor federal projects nationwide.
The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed this on Saturday in Enugu during a news conference after inspecting several ongoing road projects in the South-East.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the projects inspected include the Enu–Port Harcourt Highway, Enugu–Onitsha Road, Eke–Obinagu Flyover in Enugu, the Second Niger Bridge, and the Asaba–Onitsha Highway. Others are the Enugu–Abakaliki–Ogoja Highway, as well as several bridges and flyover projects.
Umahi said the inspection exercise was necessary to ensure quality delivery in line with the standards set by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He explained that the deployment of solar lights and CCTV cameras would not be limited to bridges alone but would cover all federal highways across the country.
“This is what we are going to implement on all our federal highways,” the minister said.
Umahi further disclosed that the first section of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Highway, measuring 61 kilometres from Enugu to Lokpanta, has been fully completed. He added that an additional three kilometres of the Port Harcourt section have also been completed.
He stressed that contractors have been directed not to remove already-laid asphalt on federal roads, noting that while different roads may require different treatments, asphalt removal would no longer be allowed.
