The Managing Director of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mr Mohammed Goni Alkali, has been commended for the commission’s food and non-food intervention efforts aimed at addressing humanitarian needs in Borno State and other parts of the North-East.
Reports from the region indicate that the intervention, which includes the distribution of food items as well as essential non-food materials, has provided significant relief to vulnerable communities affected by years of insurgency and humanitarian challenges.
Under Alkali’s leadership, the NEDC has continued to implement programmes targeted at alleviating hunger and improving living conditions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities across the North-East.
In addition to food supplies such as rice, noodles, spaghetti, cooking oil, sugar, grains, beans, maize, salt, tomato paste and condiments, the commission has also distributed non-food items including mattresses, blankets, sleeping mats, kitchen utensils and other household essentials to support affected families.
Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed appreciation for the intervention during a distribution exercise that featured rice, other food items, and various non-food materials.
“Let me acknowledge the receipt of multiple bags of rice from the North East Development Commission (NEDC). The rice we distribute here is part of the donation,” Zulum said.
The governor also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the commission for the continued support to the state.
“I wish to extend our sincere gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the management of NEDC for the support,” he added.
Stakeholders in the region noted that the combination of food and non-food assistance has contributed to easing the burden on affected populations, particularly in Borno State, which remains at the epicentre of the humanitarian crisis in the North-East.
They added that, despite ongoing challenges, the intervention represents a critical step towards meeting immediate humanitarian needs while broader recovery, rehabilitation and development efforts continue.
The NEDC was established to coordinate reconstruction, rehabilitation and development activities in states impacted by insurgency in the North-East geopolitical zone.
