FAAC Deadlock as States Push Back on ₦1.9trn January Allocation

‎Disagreements among states over the amount proposed for January revenue sharing have stalled the distribution of funds from the Federation Account for more than two weeks.

‎Sources said about ₦1.969 trillion was slated for distribution at the FAAC meeting held on January 20. However, state Commissioners of Finance reportedly rejected the figure, arguing that it was insufficient and did not reflect actual revenue accruals for December 2025.

‎FAAC typically convenes toward the end of the second or third week of each month to review revenue collected in the preceding month and allocate it to the federal, state, and local governments to fund current expenditures.

‎The unresolved dispute has delayed the payment of January salaries for many public sector workers.

‎Investigations revealed that the commissioners, acting on behalf of their state governments, insisted that a higher amount should be shared, citing improved revenue inflows in the period under review.

‎While disagreements over revenue distribution at FAAC are not uncommon, such issues are usually resolved within a few days, allowing funds to be released. An official from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) told Vanguard that the matter is expected to be resolved early next week.

‎FAAC is made up of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the OAGF, revenue-generating agencies such as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, as well as Commissioners of Finance representing the states and local government areas.
