‎Mohammed Goni Alkali is a seasoned finance professional and development administrator with decades of experience across academia, banking, and public service. He is married with children.


‎Alkali earned a First-Class Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Bayero University, Kano, in 1983, and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, in 1986.

‎He began his career as a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri in 1983 before transitioning into the banking sector in 1988. Over a distinguished banking career spanning more than 28 years, Alkali built extensive expertise in commercial, investment, and development finance.

‎Before his appointment as Executive Director, Operations at the Bank of Industry (BOI) in 2010, he served as General Manager, Large Enterprises (2002–2005), and General Manager, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from 2005 to 2010. In these roles, he played a key part in shaping financing strategies for both large corporations and SMEs across Nigeria.

‎Alkali has also undertaken several national and corporate assignments. Notably, he chaired the Technical Committee of the Federal Government’s ₦10 billion Rice Processing Intervention Fund (2008–2009) and contributed significantly to the development of the ₦100 billion Cotton, Textile and Garment (CTG) Development Scheme in 2009. He also served as a member of the Governing Council of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), among other responsibilities.

‎He is a Life Member of the Institute of Directors (IoD), a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). In addition, he has undergone advanced leadership and executive management training at leading global institutions, including Harvard Business School, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Stanford University, and Columbia University.

‎Alkali voluntarily retired from the Bank of Industry on January 18, 2016. He was appointed the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) on May 8, 2019, serving until May 7, 2023. He was subsequently reappointed for a second four-year term, effective August 9, 2023.

‎An Ambassador of Peace, Alkali currently leads the NEDC, which was established in 2017 following the passage of its enabling bill and formally signed into law on October 25, 2017.
