Fuel consumption rises to 63.7m litres daily in December — NMDPRA

Nigeria’s daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, rose to 63.7 million litres in December 2025, up from 52.9 million litres recorded in November, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has said.

The authority disclosed this in its latest monthly fact sheet, indicating a sharp month-on-month increase of 10.8 million litres per day, representing a 20.4 per cent rise.

According to the data, total domestic supply of petrol stood at 74.2 million litres per day in December, compared with 71.5 million litres per day in the preceding month.

The fact sheet further showed that supply from the Dangote Refinery to the domestic market increased to 32.01 million litres per day in December, from 19.47 million litres per day in November.

This represents a 64.4 per cent increase in month-on-month domestic supply from the refinery, although the output fell short of its planned 50 million litres per day supply target for the period under review.

NAN recalls that on Dec. 11, 2025, Dangote Refinery reduced its ex-depot petrol price to N699 per litre, leading to a retail price of about N739 per litre at MRS filling stations nationwide.
The Managing Director of Dangote Refinery, Mr David Bird, recently described the N739 per litre pump price as competitive within the current market conditions.

However, Prof. Wumi Iledare, a Professor Emeritus of Petroleum Economics and an energy expert, has criticised the price, describing it as a distortion of the market.

The NMDPRA said it would continue to monitor supply, pricing and consumption trends in line with its regulatory mandate to ensure market stability and energy security.
