The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has intensified efforts to enhance public safety and infrastructure in Maiduguri and its environs with the installation of solar-powered security lights.
The lighting project covers major roads, residential areas and previously dark spots across the metropolis, significantly improving night-time visibility and security.
The initiative is part of the commission’s broader mandate to support recovery, stabilisation and sustainable development in communities affected by insurgency in the North East.
Speaking on the development, residents described the intervention as timely, noting that the improved lighting has enhanced night movement and helped deter criminal activities.
The project is being implemented under the leadership of the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, Mr Mohammad Goni Alkali, and reflects the commission’s commitment to people-oriented projects with direct impact on daily life.
It was also gathered that the solar lighting scheme complements ongoing Federal Government efforts aimed at rebuilding critical infrastructure and restoring normalcy in post-conflict communities across the region.
Observers say the intervention has further strengthened public confidence in development institutions and demonstrated effective collaboration toward improving living conditions in Maiduguri.
