Obi Queries Tinubu’s Power Pledge as National Grid Fails Again

‎Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu over his 2022 campaign commitment on electricity supply following another collapse of the national power grid.

‎In a statement shared on his verified X account on Wednesday, titled “No Steady Power in Four Years, No Second Term,” Obi revisited Tinubu’s campaign vow, arguing that ongoing instability in the power sector runs contrary to that promise.

‎Obi quoted the president as saying during the campaign: “If I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term.” He noted that, despite this assurance, the national grid had already collapsed twice in January 2026, with the month yet to end.

‎He further recalled that the grid reportedly failed about twelve times in the previous year, describing the trend as deeply troubling for Nigerians.

‎According to Obi, the recurring collapses starkly undermine the administration’s assurances on power supply and should concern all citizens.

‎He also criticised Tinubu’s continued foreign engagements, pointing out that the president was in Turkey while pressing domestic issues remained unresolved.

‎Obi compared Nigeria with Turkey, a country of about 87 million people, highlighting the wide gap in electricity generation capacity between the two nations.
