The Spanish giants confirmed the decision in an official statement on Monday, less than 24 hours after the loss, announcing that the separation was reached by mutual agreement.
“Real Madrid C. F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as head coach of the first team,” the statement said.
The club praised Alonso for his service, describing him as a legend who embodied the values of Real Madrid throughout his career.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement added.
Real Madrid also expressed gratitude to Alonso’s technical crew for their commitment during their time at the club and wished them success in their future endeavours.
Alonso, a former Real Madrid midfielder, took charge of the club amid high expectations, but recent results, including the Super Cup defeat, have intensified scrutiny over the team’s performances.
The club is yet to announce a replacement for the departing coach.
