The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct.
The move was initiated during plenary sitting of the House, where lawmakers formally raised the allegations in line with relevant constitutional provisions.
Although details of the alleged acts of misconduct were not immediately made public, the Assembly said the process would be carried out in accordance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The Speaker of the House, who presided over the session, assured that due process would be followed and that all parties involved would be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Meanwhile, there was heightened security presence around the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt as political tension continues to rise in the state.
As at the time of filing this report, the state government had yet to issue an official response to the development.
