The Rivers State House of Assembly has denied reports that it has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The Assembly described the reports, which circulated on some news platforms on Friday, as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday night in Port Harcourt, the spokesperson of the Assembly, Mr Enemi George, said the House had not withdrawn the impeachment move and had not apologised to President Bola Tinubu over the matter.
George, who represents Asari-Toru II Constituency, said the reports were “deliberate misinformation and false narratives” aimed at causing disaffection.
“Some individuals are circulating false narratives to cause disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.
“Therefore, with the leave of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, I call on all and sundry to disregard these reports, as their actions have already failed,” George added.
He insisted that the impeachment process against the governor and his deputy was “fully on course.”
George said the Assembly remained committed to carrying out its constitutional responsibilities and would not be deterred by intimidation or misinformation.
“We remain committed to our constitutional duties and will not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our democracy,” he said.
The spokesperson confirmed that notices of alleged gross misconduct had already been served on Gov. Fubara and his deputy.
“As provided by the Constitution, the House of Assembly is empowered to act in the interest of the people and address infractions by the governor, deputy governor or any other state official. We are duty-bound to do so,” he said.
The Assembly had on Thursday commenced impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.
This development marks the third attempt by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Gov. Fubara since he assumed office in 2023, following a prolonged political feud with his predecessor, Mr Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The first impeachment attempt in October 2023 was dropped after President Tinubu intervened and brokered a peace deal between the parties.
A second attempt in March 2025 was interrupted by the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which led to the suspension of all elected officials for six months.
Gov. Fubara later returned to office in September 2025 after the emergency rule was lifted.
