2027 and the Burden of Trust: Gubio as the Consensus Path Forward

By Tijjani Shettima

As the journey toward 2027 gradually unfolds in Borno State, the conversation around succession is beginning to take a more defined and strategic shape. In this regard, the idea of Engr. Mustapha Gubio emerged as a consensus candidate particularly after the widely respected Sen. Kaka Shehu Lawan, SAN reflects not just political calculation, but a deeper commitment to continuity, stability, and inclusive governance.

Sen. Kaka Shehu Lawan remains a pillar of experience, legal brilliance, and political maturity whose contributions to Borno’s progress cannot be overstated. Aligning such a respected figure within a broader consensus arrangement speaks to unity of purpose and collective interest above personal ambition. It is this spirit of cooperation that strengthens democracy and deepens trust among stakeholders.

From a moral and spiritual standpoint, leadership is ultimately a divine trust. As stated in the Qur’an: “Say, O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will…” (Surah Aal-Imran 3:26). This verse reminds us that power and position come from Allah alone, and He bestows it upon those He deems fit often those who serve with sincerity, humility, and dedication.

Engr. Gubio fits this mould. A silent achiever, loyal to the core, and deeply grounded in grassroots realities, his emergence is seen by many as a natural continuation of the developmental strides championed by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. His track record in public service, combined with his disciplined approach and unquestionable loyalty, positions him as a stabilising force.

The strategic support and guidance of the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, alongside other critical stakeholders, further strengthens this emerging consensus. Their involvement signals a broader national and state-level alignment that prioritises unity, inclusivity, and sustainable development for Borno State.

This is not just about politics; it is about preserving gains, strengthening institutions, and ensuring that governance remains people-centred. The call for full support across party lines, especially within the APC is not misplaced. It is a call for collective responsibility.

As we look ahead, rallying behind Engr. Mustapha Gubio as a consensus candidate represents a bridge between experience and continuity, loyalty and competence, vision and execution. With unity of purpose and divine guidance, victory in 2027 will not only be possible it will be meaningful for the future of Borno State.
