Emir Calls for Community Vigilance and Lawful Self-Defense
The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, has called on residents of his emirate and communities across Northern Nigeria to explore lawful means of protecting themselves against the growing threat of banditry and terrorism.
Speaking during a security meeting held at his palace in Argungu, Kebbi State, the traditional ruler emphasized the need for communities to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard lives and property. The meeting was attended by district heads, village heads, ward leaders, and other community stakeholders.
Legal Means of Protection
According to the Emir, communities that legally acquire approved security equipment and defensive tools can send a strong message to criminal elements that they are prepared to protect themselves.
He noted that the mere knowledge that a community possesses lawful means of defense could discourage bandits from launching attacks.
”If such weapons are acquired through legal channels, criminals should be made aware that the community is capable of defending itself. This can serve as a powerful deterrent against attacks,” he said.
Rising Concerns Over Insecurity
Northern Nigeria has continued to face serious security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, and terrorist activities. Several rural communities have suffered repeated attacks, resulting in loss of lives, displacement of residents, and destruction of property.
The Emir expressed concern over the increasing boldness of criminal groups and urged local leaders to strengthen intelligence gathering and promptly report suspicious movements within their areas.
Call for Vigilance and Community Cooperation
Mera stressed that community security is a collective responsibility and encouraged residents to work closely with security agencies. He advised traditional leaders and citizens alike to remain alert and avoid complacency in the face of emerging threats.
He also lamented situations where entire communities flee during attacks, including local leaders who are expected to coordinate emergency responses.
Protecting Families and Communities
The traditional ruler maintained that citizens have a responsibility to protect their families and communities within the limits of the law. He argued that communities should not remain helpless while criminals inflict harm on innocent people.
The Emir further stated that religious teachings do not encourage people to surrender to violence but rather to take reasonable and lawful measures to ensure their safety and security.

Security experts have consistently advocated stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies as a way to combat insecurity.
