The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Dr. Mohammed G. Alkali, has been honoured with the prestigious Award of Excellence by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in recognition of his exceptional leadership, unwavering commitment to infrastructure development, and remarkable contributions to the reconstruction and socio-economic transformation of Nigeria’s North-East region.
The award was presented during the 5th Engr. Mustapha Bulama Memorial Lecture, held at the Musa Usman Conference Centre in Maiduguri, Borno State. The event brought together distinguished engineering professionals, policymakers, development partners, academics, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders to explore innovative engineering solutions for sustainable national development.
In presenting the award, the Nigerian Society of Engineers described Dr. Alkali as a visionary leader, an accomplished technocrat, and a development-driven administrator whose dedication to rebuilding the North-East continues to inspire hope and restore dignity to communities devastated by years of insurgency. The Society commended his strategic leadership, prudent management of resources, and unwavering commitment to delivering impactful projects that directly improve the lives of millions of people across the region.
Since assuming office as the pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, Dr. Alkali has spearheaded the implementation of hundreds of transformative projects across the six North-East states. Under his leadership, the Commission has delivered and continues to execute major road and bridge projects, modern schools, healthcare facilities, water supply schemes, solar-powered infrastructure, ICT and vocational training centres, agricultural support programmes, humanitarian interventions, and other critical projects aimed at accelerating recovery, fostering economic growth, and improving the quality of life of the people.
His leadership has been defined by transparency, accountability, innovation, and an unwavering focus on sustainable development. Through strategic partnerships with the Federal Government, state governments, development partners, and local communities, Dr. Alkali has positioned the NEDC as one of Nigeria’s most impactful intervention agencies, driving reconstruction efforts while laying a solid foundation for long-term peace, stability, and prosperity in the North-East.
