The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) intends to keep former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in custody until after the 2027 general elections.
The allegation was made on Thursday by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
According to Abdullahi, the opposition party believes that the continued detention of El-Rufai is politically motivated and aimed at weakening opposition forces ahead of the next general election.
ADC Raises Concerns Over El-Rufai’s Bail Conditions
Speaking during the interview, Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC is not opposed to the prosecution of any individual facing legitimate criminal charges. However, he questioned what he described as stringent bail conditions imposed on El-Rufai.
He argued that when a defendant is charged with offences considered bailable under the law but faces conditions that are difficult to meet, it raises concerns about the true intention behind the prosecution.
According to him, such circumstances create the impression that authorities may be seeking to keep the former governor in custody for an extended period rather than ensuring a fair judicial process.
Opposition Claims Detention Could Impact 2027 Election Dynamics
The ADC spokesman further claimed that members of the opposition believe El-Rufai’s continued detention could have significant implications for the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
Abdullahi alleged that the APC recognizes El-Rufai’s influence within Nigerian politics and understands that his active participation could strengthen opposition efforts against the ruling party.
He stated that many within the opposition believe there is a deliberate attempt to prevent the former Kaduna governor from playing a major political role before the elections.
”We believe they are doing everything possible to ensure that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai remains in custody until after the election,” Abdullahi said during the programme.
