The North East Development Commission (NEDC), under the leadership of its Managing Director, Mohammad Goni Alkali, deserves commendation for its remarkable interventions in the transport sector, particularly in the recent supply and promotion of Electric Vehicles (EVs) within the region. This initiative stands out as a forward-looking step towards addressing both the immediate mobility challenges of the people and the global call for cleaner energy solutions.

The introduction of Electric Vehicles will not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels but also support the fight against climate change by encouraging the use of clean and sustainable energy sources. This is especially important at a time when the cost of petroleum products continues to rise, making transportation unaffordable for many households.
Currently, the people of Maiduguri and other parts of the North East are suffering from transport difficulties due to the increase in fuel prices coupled with inadequate mobility systems. Maiduguri, in particular, faces unique challenges as it continues to recover from the devastating impact of the Boko Haram insurgency and the flood disaster experienced last year. For the ordinary people, these hardships are compounded by the lack of affordable and reliable transport options, which further deepens their daily struggles.
It is important to highlight that the transport sector is one of the key sectors that directly affects the poor, as access to mobility impacts not only movement but also livelihoods, access to education, healthcare, and markets. Thus, the NEDC’s initiative to introduce Electric Vehicles comes at a critical time and offers hope for relief and sustainable development in the region.
Finally, we pray for the Managing Director of the NEDC, Mohammad Goni Alkali, asking Allah (SWT) to continue to grant him wisdom, strength, and good health to carry out his responsibilities, and to bless the Commission’s efforts in bringing development and lasting relief to the people of the North East.
