JUST IN: Senate Slashes INEC Election Notice Timeline to 180 Days

‎The Senate has approved a reduction in the statutory period for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the notice of election, cutting it from 360 days to 180 days.

‎The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno, who proposed the amendment to shorten the timeline.

‎Monguno explained that the adjustment was necessary to help INEC comply with electoral timelines, noting that maintaining the 360-day requirement would already place the commission behind schedule ahead of the next general elections.

‎With the amendment, INEC now has a more flexible window to issue the notice of election in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
