The Senate has approved a reduction in the statutory period for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the notice of election, cutting it from 360 days to 180 days.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Tahir Monguno, who proposed the amendment to shorten the timeline.
Monguno explained that the adjustment was necessary to help INEC comply with electoral timelines, noting that maintaining the 360-day requirement would already place the commission behind schedule ahead of the next general elections.
With the amendment, INEC now has a more flexible window to issue the notice of election in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
