Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has responded to recent criticism from ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stating that while he made mistakes during his time in office, he always acted in the best interest of Nigeria.
Atiku, who is currently pursuing the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had described Jonathan as inexperienced, arguing that his leadership was marked by notable shortcomings. Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Atiku said Jonathan’s perceived lack of experience affected his ability to effectively manage national challenges.
Jonathan Responds to “Inexperience” Claim
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, addressed the criticism during the 2025 Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria awards ceremony in Abuja. He dismissed the claim that his age or experience level undermined his leadership.
According to him, leadership at any level comes with unavoidable challenges and errors.
“If I made mistakes, yes—nobody who becomes a governor or a president will say you did not make mistakes,” Jonathan said.
He further questioned the logic behind labeling him “too young” during his presidency, noting that he assumed office at 53 and left at 58.
“Must it have been 100 years before I ran the affairs of the state?” he asked.
Emphasis on Achievements and Diplomacy
Despite acknowledging imperfections, Jonathan highlighted key achievements of his administration, particularly in the area of international diplomacy. He pointed to Nigeria’s successful election to the United Nations Security Council as evidence of strategic leadership.
Jonathan argued that such diplomatic milestones required competence and could not have been achieved by an inexperienced administration.
Regional Stability and Economic Growth
Beyond the political exchange, Jonathan also raised concerns about instability in West Africa. He warned that political uncertainty remains a major barrier to economic development across the region.
According to him, sustainable economic progress is closely tied to stable governance systems.
“We cannot progress economically if we are very unstable societies politically,” he stated.
Political Context Ahead of 2027 Elections
The exchange between Jonathan and Atiku comes amid rising political activity ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Atiku’s renewed presidential ambition under the ADC signals potential shifts in the country’s political landscape, while Jonathan’s remarks reinforce his legacy and continued influence in national discourse.
