Kwankwaso Remains Committed to NDC Amid Defection Rumours, Party Insists

‎‎NDC Dismisses Claims of Internal Crisis as Speculation

‎The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly denied reports suggesting that its presidential running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, threatened to leave the party over recent political developments in Kano State.

‎Speaking during an interview on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the reports as unfounded speculation aimed at damaging the party’s image and weakening its growing influence ahead of future political engagements.

‎According to Director, Kwankwaso has remained committed to the ideals and objectives of the NDC and has never issued any ultimatum regarding his membership of the party.

‎”At no time did our leader, Kwankwaso, threaten to leave the party. Those reports were merely conjectures and media speculations designed to demarket the party,” he said.

‎Party Alleges Political Opponents Behind Rumours

‎The NDC spokesperson alleged that some elements within the ruling party and sections of the opposition may be responsible for spreading misinformation about the party’s internal affairs.

‎He argued that such narratives were intended to create the impression of division within the NDC, despite ongoing efforts by party leaders to strengthen unity and consolidate their political structures across the country.

‎Director further cited political activities in Delta State, where he claimed an incumbent politician allegedly backed multiple aspirants against a preferred party candidate, as an example of the challenges facing opposition parties.

‎Kano State Candidate Changes Spark Controversy

‎The clarification comes amid widespread reports that Kwankwaso was dissatisfied with the replacement of some candidates initially submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State.

‎The NDC leadership in Kano had recently announced adjustments to its list of candidates, citing the need to uphold an earlier power-sharing agreement reached between the party’s existing structure and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

‎A document reportedly signed by the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, stated that the changes were necessary to ensure equitable distribution of party positions and elective tickets among stakeholders.

‎Kwankwaso’s Influence Remains Significant

‎Political observers continue to regard Kwankwaso as one of the most influential opposition figures in northern Nigeria. His political movement, popularly known as the Kwankwasiyya Movement, maintains a strong grassroots presence, particularly in Kano State and other parts of the North-West.

‎Despite recent speculation, the NDC’s latest position suggests that relations between the party leadership and the Kwankwasiyya bloc remain intact.

‎Outlook for the NDC

‎As political activities intensify across the country, the NDC faces the challenge of maintaining internal cohesion while expanding its national reach. The party’s leadership appears determined to project unity and reassure supporters that reports of internal discord are exaggerated.

‎For now, the party insists that Rabiu Kwankwaso remains fully committed to the NDC and that rumours of a possible defection are baseless.
