Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Community Engagement in the Northwest, Abdullahi Yakasai, has stated that President Tinubu continues to enjoy massive political support across Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, Yakasai dismissed reports suggesting that the President has lost the backing of the Northwest and other northern regions.
According to him, such claims are politically motivated narratives being pushed by opposition parties preparing for the 2027 elections.
Yakasai maintained that the administration of President Tinubu has implemented several policies and development initiatives aimed at improving governance, infrastructure, and economic growth across the country, especially in the North.
“For anyone to say that the President no longer enjoys support in the Northwest, those are merely negative political statements,” Yakasai said during the interview.
He further argued that many residents in Northern Nigeria appreciate the efforts of the federal government despite prevailing economic challenges affecting the country.
Tinubu’s Policies Benefiting Northern Nigeria
The presidential aide noted that President Tinubu’s administration has focused on strengthening grassroots governance and empowering local communities through strategic interventions and economic reforms.
He explained that while Nigerians continue to face hardship due to inflation and rising living costs, responsibility for citizens’ welfare is shared among the federal, state, and local governments.
Yakasai stressed that state governors and local government chairmen also play critical roles in addressing poverty, insecurity, healthcare delivery, and education within their jurisdictions.
According to him, blaming the federal government alone for all socio-economic difficulties facing citizens would be unfair and politically misleading.
Opposition Preparing for 2027 Elections
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, debates surrounding President Tinubu’s popularity in the North have continued to dominate public discussions.
However, Yakasai insisted that the President still commands loyal support across key northern states, particularly in the Northwest, where the ruling All Progressives Congress remains influential.
Political analysts believe the North will remain a decisive region in determining the outcome of the 2027 presidential election due to its large voting population and strategic political influence.
Despite criticisms from opposition parties over the current economic situation, supporters of the Tinubu administration argue that ongoing reforms are necessary to stabilize Nigeria’s economy and reposition the country for long-term development.
