Sen Bala Mohammed has shelved plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following a disagreement over a proposed power-sharing arrangement.
Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP faction in the state, Sama’ila Burga, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Saturday in Bauchi.
Burga said consultations involving the governor, his faction, and APC leaders ended in a deadlock after the ruling party reportedly declined a 60–40 formula for control of party structures in the state.
He explained that the formula, which would have given the governor’s camp majority control from ward to state level, had been adopted in similar defections in other states.
According to him, the APC’s refusal to accept the arrangement stalled the negotiations, prompting the governor and his supporters to discontinue the move.
Burga, however, noted that the governor remained open to alliances with other political platforms, adding that consultations were ongoing across various levels.
He also stated that the APC initiated the discussions through the governor, involving its national leadership as well as Abba Yusuf, who visited Bauchi as part of efforts to persuade Mohammed to join the party.
“The discussions have been concluded on this note. You cannot expect a sitting government bringing its structure from ward to state level without significant control of the party,” Burga said.
He added that the development showed the APC was not prepared to accommodate the existing PDP structure in Bauchi State.
