The Kano State Hisbah Board has intensified preparations for the upcoming state-sponsored mass wedding programme, with nearly 720 prospective couples already undergoing comprehensive medical screening across 24 local government areas.
The large-scale exercise forms part of the Kano State Government’s plan to facilitate the marriage of about 3,000 prospective couples, particularly targeting widows, divorcees, orphans, and other less-privileged members of society.
According to officials, the medical screening exercise is a crucial stage in the process, aimed at ensuring healthy and sustainable marriages. The screenings are being conducted in partnership with the Kano State Ministry of Health and involve a series of mandatory health assessments.
Comprehensive Health Screening for Prospective Couples
The Deputy Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Mujahideen Aminudddeen, disclosed that the ongoing exercise includes tests for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, drug abuse, pregnancy, and other sexually transmitted infections.
He explained that the initiative is designed to safeguard the health and well-being of intending couples while reducing the risk of hereditary and communicable diseases within families.
The screening exercise is currently being conducted across various local government areas, with participants from metropolitan Kano scheduled to continue their tests at the Kano State Agency for the Control of AIDS (KSACA) office located along Naibawa.
Prospective couples have been instructed to present copies of their registration forms before undergoing the required medical examinations.
Kano Government’s Commitment to Social Welfare
The mass wedding programme, which has been revived under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is widely regarded as one of the state’s key social intervention initiatives.
Beyond facilitating marriages, the programme seeks to reduce financial burdens associated with wedding expenses and provide beneficiaries with support packages that may include household items and financial assistance.
Observers say the initiative has become a significant tool for promoting social inclusion, reducing economic hardship, and strengthening family values among vulnerable groups in Kano State.
Promoting Healthy Families and Community Development
Health experts have consistently emphasized the importance of pre-marital medical screening in preventing avoidable health complications and ensuring compatibility between couples.
By integrating mandatory health checks into the mass wedding programme, the Kano State Government aims to build healthier families and contribute to long-term community development.
As preparations continue, thousands of prospective beneficiaries are expected to complete the screening process in the coming weeks, paving the way for one of the largest mass wedding ceremonies in northern Nigeria.
Looking Ahead
The Kano mass wedding initiative continues to attract attention as a unique blend of social welfare, public health awareness, and community support. With hundreds of couples already screened and thousands more expected to participate, the programme underscores the government’s commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable citizens while promoting responsible and healthy marriages.
For many beneficiaries, the initiative represents not only an opportunity to start a new family but also a pathway toward greater social and economic stability.
