Presidency Dismisses Peter Obi’s 2027 Ambition, Says Tinubu Remains Unmatched

‎‎The Presidency has launched a fresh criticism of former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that he lacks the leadership credentials and political achievements needed to rival President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎The remarks were made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, in a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday.

‎According to Onanuga, Obi has failed to demonstrate the level of vision, innovation, and governance record that would place him in the same league as President Tinubu. He described the former Anambra governor as a “copy-and-paste politician,” alleging that Obi has not shown evidence of original thinking throughout his political career.

‎The presidential aide further argued that Obi’s eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State did not leave behind significant developmental achievements that could serve as a benchmark for national leadership.

‎Onanuga referenced comments previously attributed to Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano, who reportedly criticized the security situation inherited from the former governor. He maintained that effective leadership requires foresight, strategic planning, and the ability to implement long-term development policies.

‎Drawing a comparison between the two politicians, Onanuga highlighted Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State, noting that the president established key infrastructure and development frameworks that continue to influence the state’s growth years after leaving office.

‎He pointed specifically to Lagos State’s rail transportation and road development masterplans, which he said remain central to ongoing infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

‎“Nigeria deserves a leader who can think beyond the ordinary and deliver practical solutions to national challenges. President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated deep thinking and effective leadership,” Onanuga stated.

‎The comments come amid increasing political discussions surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with major political figures and parties already positioning themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

‎Peter Obi remains one of Nigeria’s most influential opposition figures, enjoying strong support among many young voters and reform-minded Nigerians. However, members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continue to defend President Tinubu’s leadership record and argue that his experience and achievements make him the preferred choice for national leadership.

‎As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, analysts expect debates over governance records, economic policies, infrastructure development, and national security to dominate conversations among political stakeholders and the electorate.
