The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark, has declared that no amount of legal or institutional pressure will silence the party, describing the current challenges facing the opposition as a “generational test” for Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking at the party’s 2026 National Convention held in Abuja, Mark emphasized that the ADC’s mission goes beyond political ambition, framing it as a responsibility to restore public confidence in governance and democratic values.
“Our objective is not merely political success or a quest for power,” he said. “We see it as a duty to demonstrate that democracy can deliver a better life for Nigerians.”
Call for Unity Among Opposition Leaders
Mark used the platform to call on opposition figures across party lines to unite in addressing what he described as a growing threat to democratic governance in the country. According to him, Nigeria’s challenges transcend partisan interests and require collective action.
“This is a patriotic duty to rescue our country from creeping dictatorship and exploitative governance,” he stated.
Concerns Over Democratic Institutions
The ADC chairman raised concerns about recent developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging that certain actions have undermined democratic processes and fairness.
He accused unnamed forces of attempting to frustrate the party’s convention through legal battles and administrative obstacles, including removal of party details from official platforms and denial of access to preferred venues.
“They sought to stop this convention from happening. But we are here today because the will of the people cannot be suppressed,” Mark said.
Resilience in the Face of Challenges
Despite what he described as betrayal and institutional resistance, Mark maintained that the ADC remains steadfast and united. He argued that such pressures have only strengthened the party’s resolve and broadened its support base.
“You have not weakened us; you have welded us together,” he declared. “Every attempt to suppress this party has deepened our resolve.”
Defending Multi-Party Democracy
Mark warned against the dangers of a one-party system, stressing that a strong opposition is essential for the survival of democracy. He reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to safeguarding democratic freedoms and ensuring accountability in governance.
“The ADC cannot be wished away. It cannot be litigated into silence. It belongs to the Nigerian people,” he said.
A Vision for National Renewal
Concluding his address, Mark highlighted the need for renewed commitment to people-centered governance. He expressed optimism that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges through collective effort and principled leadership.
“Nigeria will rediscover itself,” he said. “The people still believe, despite the difficulties they face.”
