The Kaga Local Government Area has officially flagged off the distribution and sale of highly subsidized fertilizer to farmers for the 2026 wet farming season while empowering over 200 beneficiaries with livelihood support items, in a major step towards boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and improving rural livelihoods.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held at the Kaga Local Government Secretariat in Benisheikh, the Executive Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Hon. Zannah Lawan Ajimi, described the initiative as a strategic investment in agriculture aimed at making fertilizer affordable and accessible to genuine farmers across the Local Government Area.
Kaga Local Government received an allocation of 600 bags of 50kg NPK fertilizer from the Borno State Government at a subsidized price of ₦30,000 per bag, representing a 50 percent subsidy approved by the Executive Governor of Borno State, His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON. To further reduce the financial burden on farmers, the Local Government provided an additional 50 percent subsidy, lowering the selling price to ₦15,000, with a ₦500 administrative and logistics service fee, bringing the total payable amount to ₦15,500 per beneficiary.
Addressing farmers and stakeholders, Hon. Ajimi stressed that “Agriculture remains the backbone of our local economy and the primary source of livelihood for many of our people. This intervention is not merely about reducing the cost of fertilizer; it is an investment in our farmers, an investment in food security, and an investment in the future of Kaga. We remain committed to ensuring that this programme is implemented with transparency, fairness, and accountability so that genuine farmers across every polling unit benefit. We deeply appreciate the unwavering support of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, whose commitment to agriculture continues to make interventions such as this possible,” the Chairman said.
He noted that Governor Zulum’s sustained investment in agriculture has transformed farming across Borno State through the provision of subsidized farm inputs and other support programmes, reaffirming Kaga Local Government’s commitment to complementing the State Government’s agricultural transformation agenda.
All 600 bags of subsidized fertilizer allocated to Kaga Local Government are scheduled for distribution to eligible farmers through a transparent process supervised by Ward Fertilizer Distribution Committees to ensure fairness and accountability.
The event also featured an empowerment programme during which over 200 beneficiaries received livelihood support items donated by the Member representing Kaga Constituency in the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Mustapha Alibe Benisheikh, who was represented by Hon. Mustapha Bukar Daima. The items distributed included bicycles, wheelbarrows, pasta-making machines, grinding machines, sewing machines, and mats to support small businesses and improve household incomes.
In his remarks, Hon. Mustapha Bukar Daima commended the Executive Chairman for complementing the agricultural initiatives of the Borno State Government through the additional fertilizer subsidy. He reaffirmed the commitment of Hon. Mustapha Alibe Benisheikh to supporting programmes that improve the welfare and economic well-being of the people of Kaga Local Government Area.
Also speaking, a member of the Borno State Transition Committee on Fertilizer Distribution, Audu Ali Damasak, praised Hon. Zannah Lawan Ajimi for his visionary leadership, transparency, and people-centred approach to governance. He described the Chairman’s administration as a beacon of hope and development for the people of Kaga, adding that the transparent strategy adopted for the fertilizer distribution inspires confidence that genuine farmers will benefit from the programme while upholding fairness, accountability, and good governance.
The Chairman urged all beneficiaries to make judicious use of the subsidized fertilizer and empowerment items to improve their farming activities and livelihoods. He emphasized that the interventions were designed to enhance agricultural productivity, promote self-reliance, and improve household incomes, assuring residents that his administration would continue to implement impactful programmes that improve the welfare of the people.
The fertilizer distribution programme adds to a series of agricultural interventions undertaken by the present administration. Earlier this farming season, Kaga Local Government provided free tractor services to more than 350 vulnerable farmers to support land preparation and reduce cultivation costs. The Council also distributed improved assorted seeds to over 600 farmers, further demonstrating its commitment to increasing agricultural productivity and strengthening food security.
The flag-off ceremony attracted a large gathering of government officials, political leaders, traditional rulers, farmers’ groups, and community stakeholders. Among those in attendance were the Vice Chairman of Kaga Local Government, Hon. Kaka Bukar Ali Hassan; the Special Adviser to the Governor, Hon. Bukar Lawan Ngamdu; the Secretary of the Local Government; the Treasurer; Heads of Departments; councillors; local and ward APC executives; representatives of the Farmers’ Union; traditional and political stakeholders; and members of the Borno State Transition Committee on Fertilizer Distribution for Kaga Local Government Area.
The launch of the fertilizer distribution programme, alongside the empowerment of over 200 beneficiaries, reinforces Kaga Local Government’s commitment to supporting farmers, expanding economic opportunities, strengthening food security, and advancing the agricultural transformation agenda of the Borno State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON.
