Kano Assembly Member Muhammad Ahmad Tomas Dumps NDC, Rejoins APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

‎‎A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Makoda Constituency, Hon. Muhammad Ahmad Tomas, has officially defected from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that is expected to reshape political alignments in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎The lawmaker announced his return to the ruling APC on Monday during a visit to the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Ibrahim Jibrin, at his residence in Abuja.

‎Hon. Tomas was accompanied by the Chairmen of Makoda and Dambatta Local Government Areas, Alhaji Isa Currency and Alhaji Jamilu Abubakar Dambatta, respectively.

‎Barau Welcomes Defection

‎Receiving the returning lawmaker, Senator Barau described the decision as a significant development for the APC and a positive step towards strengthening democratic governance and political stability in Kano State.

‎According to the Deputy Senate President, the APC remains committed to inclusiveness and equal opportunities for both old and returning members.

‎“This is a timely and commendable decision. It demonstrates a commitment to development, unity, and good governance,” Barau stated.

‎He assured Tomas of fair treatment within the party structure, emphasizing that the APC’s doors remain open to individuals willing to contribute to national and state development.

‎Boost for APC in Kano North

‎Political observers believe the return of Hon. Tomas could further strengthen the APC’s influence in Kano North Senatorial District and across the state.

‎Senator Barau expressed confidence that the lawmaker’s return would consolidate the party’s grassroots support and enhance its preparations for future electoral contests.

‎In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, the Deputy Senate President said he was optimistic that the development would deepen the APC’s presence in the region and foster greater political unity.

‎Why Tomas Left the NDC

‎Sources close to the lawmaker revealed that his decision to leave the NDC followed recent internal party developments.

‎Hon. Tomas reportedly lost the NDC ticket to contest for a second term in the Kano State House of Assembly after the party adopted a consensus arrangement during its candidate selection process.
‎The development is believed to have influenced his decision to return to the APC, where he previously built his political career.

‎Political Journey

‎Before joining the NDC, Tomas was a member of the APC and represented Makoda Constituency under the party’s platform.

‎His earlier defection to the NDC attracted significant attention in Kano political circles, particularly as he was welcomed by prominent party leaders, including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

‎However, his latest move signals another shift in Kano’s evolving political landscape as parties continue to strategize ahead of future elections.

‎Implications for Kano Politics

‎Political analysts say the defection highlights the growing realignments taking place among political parties in Kano State. With the 2027 elections drawing closer, movements of influential politicians are expected to shape party structures, voter confidence, and electoral calculations.

‎The APC, which continues to strengthen its base across Kano State, may view Tomas’ return as an opportunity to expand its support in Makoda and neighboring communities.

‎As political activities intensify nationwide, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether more politicians follow a similar path in the coming months.
