NEDC, Bank of Industry Launch ₦30 Billion MSME Development Fund to Boost Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth in North-East Nigeria

‎‎In a major step toward accelerating economic transformation in Nigeria’s North-East, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has approved the establishment of a ₦30 billion NEDC–Bank of Industry (BOI) MSME Development Fund aimed at expanding access to finance and strengthening the capacity of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the region.

‎The initiative is expected to provide affordable financing, business advisory services, entrepreneurship training, and capacity-building programmes for small businesses, with particular emphasis on youth- and women-owned enterprises. It forms part of the Commission’s broader strategy to promote inclusive economic growth, stimulate private-sector investment, and create sustainable employment opportunities.

‎The programme is being championed under the leadership of Dr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North East Development Commission. With decades of experience in Nigeria’s financial sector, including his previous role as Executive Director at the Bank of Industry (BOI), Dr. Alkali has consistently advocated sustainable economic policies that empower businesses, expand investment opportunities, and strengthen local industries.

‎Expanding Access to Finance for Small Businesses

‎Limited access to affordable credit remains one of the biggest obstacles facing entrepreneurs in Nigeria, particularly in regions recovering from years of conflict and economic disruption. Many promising businesses struggle to secure funding needed to purchase equipment, expand production, employ skilled workers, or enter new markets.

‎The newly established ₦30 billion Development Fund is designed to bridge this financing gap by providing eligible MSMEs with improved access to financial support under flexible and sustainable arrangements. The intervention is expected to encourage business expansion, improve productivity, and increase the survival rate of small enterprises throughout the North-East.

‎By supporting businesses at different stages of growth, the Fund aims to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem while encouraging innovation across key sectors of the regional economy.

‎Beyond Financing: Building Stronger Businesses

‎In addition to financial support, the NEDC–BOI MSME Development Fund will provide comprehensive business development services designed to improve the long-term sustainability of beneficiary enterprises.

‎These services are expected to include entrepreneurship development, business planning, financial management, marketing strategies, digital skills, corporate governance, and enterprise management training.

‎Capacity-building programmes will equip entrepreneurs with practical knowledge needed to compete in today’s evolving business environment while improving access to new markets and investment opportunities.

‎Empowering Youths and Women

‎A defining feature of the initiative is its strong focus on youth and women entrepreneurs.

‎Young people and women constitute a significant proportion of small business owners in the North-East, yet many continue to face barriers in accessing finance, technical support, and business networks.

‎The Development Fund seeks to address these challenges by prioritizing inclusive financing and targeted capacity-building initiatives that promote entrepreneurship among underserved groups.

‎Experts believe empowering women-led and youth-owned businesses will contribute significantly to poverty reduction, household income growth, and long-term economic resilience across the region.

‎Strengthening Local Industries

‎The Fund is also expected to stimulate industrial development by supporting businesses involved in agriculture, agro-processing, manufacturing, technology, commerce, renewable energy, transportation, and other productive sectors.

‎As local enterprises expand, demand for goods and services is expected to increase, creating stronger value chains and encouraging greater participation of indigenous businesses in regional economic activities.

‎This approach aligns with the Commission’s objective of promoting sustainable industrialization while reducing dependence on external markets.

‎Job Creation and Economic Recovery

‎The establishment of the ₦30 billion MSME Development Fund is expected to contribute significantly to job creation across the North-East.

‎As beneficiary businesses expand their operations, they are likely to employ more workers, engage local suppliers, and generate additional economic activities within their communities.

‎The multiplier effect of increased investment in MSMEs is expected to improve household incomes, stimulate local commerce, and support broader economic recovery efforts in states affected by years of insecurity and underdevelopment.

Development economists widely recognize MSMEs as the backbone of many successful economies because they account for a substantial share of employment, innovation, and private-sector growth.

Strategic Partnership with the Bank of Industry

The collaboration between the North East Development Commission and the Bank of Industry combines regional development expertise with one of Nigeria’s foremost development finance institutions.

The Bank of Industry has decades of experience supporting businesses through financing and enterprise development programmes, making it a strategic partner in delivering sustainable interventions capable of producing measurable economic impact.

Through this partnership, beneficiaries are expected to receive not only financial assistance but also professional guidance that enhances business performance and accountability.

Advancing the North-East Development Agenda

The establishment of the Fund is consistent with the objectives of the North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan (NESDMP), which seeks to rebuild communities, stimulate economic activities, reduce poverty, and create opportunities for inclusive prosperity.

It also complements the Federal Government’s broader economic agenda, which prioritizes job creation, industrial development, financial inclusion, and private-sector-led growth as key drivers of national development.

Looking Ahead

Stakeholders have welcomed the creation of the ₦30 billion NEDC–BOI MSME Development Fund as a timely intervention capable of transforming the business landscape across the North-East.

By improving access to finance, strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, supporting local industries, and expanding employment opportunities, the initiative has the potential to unlock the economic potential of thousands of businesses and contribute to long-term regional prosperity.

As implementation progresses, the Fund is expected to serve as a catalyst for sustainable enterprise development, reinforcing the North East Development Commission’s commitment to building a resilient, productive, and economically vibrant North-East where businesses can thrive and communities can prosper.
