The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) under the leadership of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Mohammed G Alkali has strengthened access to specialised reproductive and maternal healthcare in the North-East with the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Fertility Care Centre and En-Suite Maternity Complex at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno State.
The facility was commissioned by the Honourable Minister of State for Regional Development, H.E. Uba Maigari Ahmadu, alongside the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, highlighting the Federal Government’s continued commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to specialised medical services across the region.
A Major Investment in Fertility Care
Completed in May 2026, the Fertility Care Centre represents a major intervention by NEDC in an area of healthcare that has traditionally required many families in the North-East to seek treatment outside the region.
The Commission constructed, fully equipped and furnished the centre with modern medical and laboratory facilities designed to support advanced assisted reproductive services.
Among the specialised equipment installed at the facility are systems required for procedures such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), alongside incubators and specialised laboratory equipment necessary for modern fertility treatment.
The investment is expected to strengthen UMTH’s capacity to provide comprehensive fertility services while creating a more convenient and affordable option for couples seeking specialised reproductive healthcare.
Reducing the Burden of Medical Travel
For many families experiencing fertility challenges, access to advanced reproductive healthcare has historically involved travelling long distances to major Nigerian cities such as Lagos and Abuja, while some patients seek treatment outside the country.
The establishment of the new centre in Maiduguri is therefore significant not only as a healthcare infrastructure project but also as an intervention aimed at reducing the financial, emotional and logistical burden associated with medical travel.

En-Suite Maternity Services
The commissioning of the En-Suite Maternity Complex alongside the Fertility Care Centre further expands the range of reproductive and maternal healthcare services available at UMTH.

The Fertility Care Centre is part of NEDC’s broader healthcare investment programme aimed at improving specialist medical services across the North-East.
The Commission has also invested in advanced diagnostic infrastructure, including eight state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines deployed to strengthen diagnostic capacity across the region.
In addition, NEDC has provided major diagnostic equipment and invested more than N3 billion in ophthalmic equipment for the Maiduguri Eye and Dental Hospital.
These interventions are designed to reduce gaps in specialised healthcare and improve the ability of medical institutions across the North-East to diagnose and treat complex conditions.
