‎‎The North East Development Commission (NEDC), under the leadership of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mohammed G. Alkali, is making significant progress in the reconstruction of the Galtimari/Fori Bridge in Maiduguri, Borno State. The critical infrastructure project is part of the Commission’s broader commitment to rebuilding communities affected by the devastating September 2024 floods that disrupted lives, destroyed public infrastructure, and displaced thousands of residents across the state.

‎The reconstruction of the Galtimari/Fori Bridge represents one of the key interventions aimed at restoring access to essential services, improving transportation, and supporting economic recovery in flood-affected communities.

Once completed, the bridge will reconnect Galtimari, Fori, and neighbouring communities, making it easier for residents, traders, students, farmers, and healthcare workers to move safely and efficiently.

‎Construction work is progressing steadily, with engineers and contractors working to ensure that the bridge meets modern engineering standards capable of withstanding future environmental challenges. The project reflects the Commission’s determination to deliver durable infrastructure that promotes long-term development across the North-East.

‎The September 2024 floods caused widespread destruction in Maiduguri and several parts of Borno State, washing away roads, bridges, homes, schools, and other public facilities. Since then, the NEDC has continued to implement strategic recovery programmes designed to restore damaged infrastructure while improving the resilience of vulnerable communities.

‎Beyond improving transportation, the reconstructed bridge is expected to stimulate economic activities by facilitating the movement of agricultural produce, goods, and services between communities. Local businesses will benefit from easier access to markets, while emergency responders and healthcare providers will be able to reach residents more quickly during emergencies.

‎The project also demonstrates the NEDC’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to accelerate post-disaster recovery and sustainable development in the North-East. Through investments in roads, bridges, schools, healthcare facilities, water supply, and other critical infrastructure, the Commission continues to improve the quality of life for millions of people across the region.
