Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has hinted at a possible return to active politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying he would consult widely before taking any decision on contesting.
Jonathan made the statement on Thursday in Abuja while addressing a group of supporters who marched to his office urging him to join the 2027 presidential race.
The former president, who served as Nigeria’s leader from 2010 to 2015, stressed the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections in sustaining democracy and national development.
According to Jonathan, patriotic citizens are essential for nation-building, warning that selfish leadership and lack of commitment to national interest could hinder Nigeria’s progress.
“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation and take the money elsewhere to enjoy their lives,” Jonathan said.
Jonathan Emphasises Peaceful Elections Ahead of 2027
Speaking further, the former president urged Nigerian youths to remain committed to peaceful and credible elections, describing electoral integrity as the foundation of good governance.
Jonathan noted that many competent citizens avoid politics because of violence and irregularities associated with elections in the country.
“The key thing we need in this country is peace. You must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in Nigeria,” he stated.
He also encouraged young Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process, especially by exercising their voting rights during elections.
The former president revealed that he had observed elections in more than 14 African countries, gaining valuable democratic experience across the continent.
Goodluck Jonathan Reacts to Calls for 2027 Presidential Bid
Responding to supporters demanding that he contest the 2027 presidential election, Jonathan described the presidency as a serious national responsibility rather than a mere political ambition.
“Presidential race is not a computer game, but I heard you, and I will consult widely,” he said.
Although Jonathan stopped short of officially declaring his intention to run, his comments are already generating political discussions across Nigeria ahead of the next general election.
Political observers believe his statement may intensify conversations within opposition circles and among supporters seeking an alternative political direction in 2027.
Youth Participation Key to Nigeria’s Future – Jonathan
The former president further stated that Nigeria’s future depends heavily on the involvement of young people in governance and democratic processes.
He urged youths to think beyond immediate political gains and focus on building a stable country that future generations would be proud of.
Jonathan’s remarks come at a time when political realignments and consultations are gradually beginning ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
