Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday sealed properties belonging to former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in Abuja.
This development comes as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) disclosed plans to arraign former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over alleged financial misconduct.
Witnesses reported that EFCC officials, dressed in plain clothes, were seen marking Malami’s residences in the Maitama area of Abuja. The action sparked a confrontation, as the former AGF questioned the legality of the documents presented by the operatives.
Malami argued that the court order cited by the EFCC had expired and insisted that the matter remains before the court. He maintained that there was no valid directive authorizing the commission to take over or mark his properties, describing the move as an attempt to embarrass him.
Despite his objections, EFCC officials maintained that they were acting within the law, stating that the properties were subject to forfeiture. The buildings were subsequently marked with a notice indicating restriction and warning the public to keep off.
Speaking later during an interview on Channels Television, Malami explained that an interim forfeiture order had been issued on January 6, 2026, granting him 14 days to respond. He added that he had already challenged the order in court and filed an application to have it set aside, emphasizing that legal proceedings are still ongoing.
