Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has taken another significant step towards strengthening healthcare delivery in the state with the official groundbreaking ceremony for a 100-bed General Hospital in Kwaya Kusar Local Government Area. The project forms part of his administration’s broader commitment to improving access to quality healthcare and expanding critical public infrastructure across Borno State.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Saturday, fulfilled a pledge Governor Zulum made earlier during the launch of the 2026 Wet Farming Season and the distribution of subsidised fertilisers and agricultural inputs to farmers in Kwaya Kusar.
New Hospital to Strengthen Healthcare Delivery
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Zulum said the new hospital would complement the existing General Hospital in Kwaya Kusar, which will also undergo extensive renovation and be equipped with modern medical facilities.
According to the governor, the dual investment will significantly improve healthcare services, reduce pressure on existing facilities, and ensure residents have access to quality medical care closer to their communities.
”When we visited Kwaya Kusar earlier this week, we promised to build a modern 100-bed General Hospital. Today, we are fulfilling that promise. We expect the project to be completed within six months,” Governor Zulum said.
He added that his administration remains committed to delivering projects that directly improve the welfare of citizens through better healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Existing Hospital to Be Upgraded
Governor Zulum explained that healthcare services would not be disrupted during construction, as the current General Hospital would continue operating while undergoing phased renovation.
The existing facility will receive new medical equipment, improved infrastructure, and upgraded service areas, enabling it to provide better healthcare services to residents of Kwaya Kusar and surrounding communities.
The governor noted that the two hospitals will work together to meet the increasing healthcare needs of the growing population.
Approval for Recruitment of Healthcare Personnel
To ensure the smooth operation of the healthcare facility, Governor Zulum approved the immediate recruitment of additional health workers.
The approved appointments include:
One Registered Nurse
Five Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs)
Two Medical Records Officers
The recruitment is expected to strengthen the healthcare workforce and improve service delivery once the hospital becomes operational.
Modern Medical Facility with Comprehensive Services
The Senior Technical Assistant to the Governor on Special Projects, Engr. Emmanuel Yerima Gadzama, said the hospital has been carefully designed to meet modern healthcare standards.
According to him, the facility will include all essential departments and medical units expected in a standard General Hospital, providing residents with improved access to quality medical services.
He described the project as another milestone in Governor Zulum’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and modernise public infrastructure across Borno State.
Governor Inspects Major Projects Across Southern Borno
As part of his fifth-day working tour of Southern Borno, Governor Zulum also inspected several strategic projects spread across four local government areas.
The projects visited include:
A 48-classroom Higher Islamic College in Shani.
A 36-classroom Mega School in Marama.
A 48-classroom Integrated Mega School in Shaffa.
A 100-bed General Hospital in Shaffa.
General Hospital Briyel.
The ongoing General Hospital project in Azare.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and the commitment demonstrated by contractors handling the projects.
He commended the pace of construction and urged contractors to maintain high standards while ensuring timely completion.
Commitment to Completing All Ongoing Projects
Governor Zulum reassured residents that every project initiated by his administration would be completed before the end of his tenure.
He emphasized that beyond constructing physical infrastructure, the government is putting mechanisms in place to ensure the long-term sustainability and effective management of public facilities.
”We are approaching the final phase of this administration, and we are determined to complete all ongoing projects, In Shaa Allah. We will also establish institutional arrangements that will ensure these projects continue to serve the people for many years,” he said.

Since assuming office, Governor Zulum has continued to invest heavily in healthcare, education, agriculture, roads, housing, water supply, and humanitarian interventions aimed at rebuilding communities affected by years of insecurity.
