NEDC Boosts Northeast Infrastructure With Donation of Broadcast Equipment, Solar Systems and Airport Trolleys

‎The North East Development Commission (NEDC) under the leadership of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Mohammed G Alkali strengthened critical public infrastructure in Nigeria’s Northeast region through the donation of modern broadcast equipment, solar power systems, and airport luggage trolleys to key federal agencies.

‎The intervention, which benefited the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), is part of the commission’s broader commitment to improving institutional capacity, public communication, and service delivery across the region.

‎The items were officially presented at the NEDC headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State, by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Dr. Mohammed Goni Alkali.

‎NEDC Targets Critical Needs in Northeast Development

‎Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Dr Alkali explained that the commission adopted a demand-driven strategy in identifying the needs of partner agencies before providing support.

‎According to him, the NEDC engaged stakeholders extensively to determine priority areas requiring urgent intervention, ensuring that resources were directed toward impactful projects capable of improving operational efficiency.

‎“We engaged all our partners and stakeholders to identify their immediate needs. With the FRCN, we held productive discussions and narrowed down their requirements to avoid duplication of support,” Dr Alkali said.

‎He disclosed that the commission supplied over 35 different items to the FRCN, including broadcasting equipment and solar energy systems designed to improve media operations within the Northeast.

‎The NEDC boss further revealed that similar interventions had previously been extended to security agencies, including the military and police, as well as media institutions operating across the region.

‎Solar Power Systems to Improve Radio Broadcasting in Northeast Nigeria

‎The donation of solar power systems is expected to significantly improve broadcasting operations in Northeast Nigeria, where unstable electricity supply has long affected media organisations.

‎Responding to the intervention, the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, described the partnership with the NEDC as timely and strategic.

‎Bulama noted that the installation of solar systems would enable FRCN stations in the Northeast to remain operational for between 12 and 15 hours daily, thereby improving access to information, public enlightenment, and emergency communication.

‎“The supply of solar power systems means our stations can now operate for no fewer than 12 to 15 hours daily, which was previously difficult due to power challenges,” he stated.

‎He added that the intervention would directly benefit FRCN stations located in Maiduguri, Yola, Jalingo, Bauchi, Gombe, and Damaturu.

‎Industry observers believe the improved broadcasting capacity will play an important role in information dissemination, public awareness campaigns, security communication, and regional development efforts.

‎FAAN Receives 132 Luggage Trolleys at Maiduguri Airport

‎In a separate intervention aimed at improving passenger convenience at airports within the Northeast, the NEDC donated 132 luggage trolleys to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

‎The Northeast Regional Manager of FAAN, Fatima Aliyu Betara, commended the commission for the gesture, noting that the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in Maiduguri received 32 units.

‎She stated that the trolleys would ease the movement of luggage and improve the travel experience for passengers using airports across the region.

‎Betara also appealed to the NEDC to support the establishment of a regional Hajj camp, explaining that the existing facility is currently occupied by military personnel due to ongoing security challenges caused by insurgency.

‎NEDC’s Role in Northeast Reconstruction and Development

‎The latest intervention highlights the growing role of the North East Development Commission in rebuilding public infrastructure and strengthening institutions affected by years of insurgency in Northeast Nigeria.

‎Since its establishment, the commission has continued to invest in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, transportation, security support, renewable energy, and humanitarian services.

‎Development analysts say the donation of solar systems and operational equipment aligns with broader efforts to modernise public institutions, improve communication infrastructure, and enhance service delivery in the Northeast region.
