NEDC Responds Swiftly to Windstorm Disaster in Yobe
The distribution exercise took place on Monday, with officials of the NEDC and Yobe SEMA overseeing the delivery of essential food and non-food items to the affected households.
Representing the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, Dr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, the Commission’s Yobe State Coordinator, Prof. Ali Ibrahim Abbas, said the intervention was approved immediately after an assessment confirmed the extent of damage caused by the windstorm.
According to Prof. Abbas, the Commission remains committed to providing timely humanitarian assistance to disaster-affected communities across the North-East region.
He explained that the intervention was designed to cushion the impact of the disaster, restore hope to affected families, and complement the efforts of the Yobe State Government in responding to emergencies.
Essential Relief Materials Distributed
Beneficiaries received a variety of essential items to support their immediate needs, including:
Bags of rice
Sleeping mats
Mosquito nets
Blankets
Children’s clothing
The relief materials are expected to provide temporary support for families as they begin rebuilding their homes and livelihoods following the devastating windstorm.
Call for Environmental Cleanliness
While addressing residents during the distribution exercise, Prof. Abbas encouraged members of the affected communities to maintain clean surroundings by clearing drainage channels and disposing of waste properly.
He noted that keeping waterways free from obstruction would significantly reduce the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season, thereby helping to prevent future environmental disasters.
