Under the leadership of Dr. Mohammed Goni Alkali, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) is advancing healthcare delivery in Adamawa State through the construction of a modern Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Centre and a fully equipped Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.
The Adamawa State Coordinator of the Commission, Barr. Khalifa Mohammed Lawan, made this known during an inspection visit to the project sites within the hospital.
He explained that the intervention was initiated in response to the growing need for advanced diagnostic facilities and improved healthcare services for residents of Adamawa State and neighboring communities.
According to Barr. Lawan, the MRI Centre is a comprehensive medical facility designed not only to provide specialized diagnostic services but also to support healthcare personnel and patients. The project features residential accommodation for doctors and nurses, a waiting area for patients’ relatives, solar-powered lighting, and standby power generators to ensure uninterrupted operations.
On the Accident and Emergency Unit, he noted that the hospital’s existing facility has been overstretched by the increasing number of patients requiring urgent medical attention. The new A&E complex, he said, is being developed to modern standards and equipped with contemporary facilities to improve emergency care and response capacity.
Barr. Lawan further called on the management of MAUTH to ensure proper maintenance and protection of the facilities upon completion in order to sustain their long-term benefits.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Site Engineer of Sahab Solid Construction and Services Limited, Engr. Zachariah Yanna Visa, disclosed that the projects have attained about 85 percent completion. He stated that current works include roofing, installation of roof trusses, tiling, rendering, and other finishing activities, expressing confidence that the projects would be completed within schedule.
When completed, the projects are expected to significantly expand access to specialized diagnostic services and strengthen emergency healthcare delivery at MAUTH, Yola, further improving healthcare outcomes across Adamawa State and the North-East region.
