Federal Government Targets Trade, Security and Regional Connectivity in North-East Nigeria
The Federal Government has officially flagged off the construction of the 49.55-kilometre Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala Road and the 49.15-kilometre Bama–Banki Road, marking another significant milestone in the ongoing reconstruction and economic revitalisation of Borno State and the North-East region.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held along the Maiduguri–Gamboru Ngala corridor, was performed on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima.
The strategic road projects are expected to improve transportation, strengthen regional trade, enhance security operations, and reconnect communities that have endured years of insurgency.
Strategic Roads to Boost Cross-Border Trade
The Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala and Bama–Banki roads serve as major economic corridors linking Nigeria with neighbouring countries. Once completed, the highways will facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, commercial goods, humanitarian supplies, and passengers while improving access to border communities.
The projects are also expected to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, stimulate local businesses, and encourage private sector investment across Borno State and the wider North-East.
With Gamboru Ngala and Banki serving as important border towns, the road rehabilitation will strengthen regional integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework and support economic activities across West and Central Africa.
Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Infrastructure Development
Representing President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima said infrastructure remains one of the Federal Government’s highest priorities, stressing that road development is essential for economic growth and national unity.
According to him, the administration is fulfilling its commitment to delivering critical infrastructure that will improve the lives of Nigerians.
He noted that the Bama–Banki corridor is of strategic importance because of its role in agriculture, commerce, and national security, while the Dikwa–Gamboru Ngala Road will reconnect communities and restore confidence in the region’s economy.
Vice President Commends Governor Zulum
Vice President Shettima praised Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, describing him as one of Nigeria’s best-performing governors.
He attributed the success of ongoing reconstruction efforts to the strong partnership between the Federal Government and the Borno State Government, noting that collaborative governance has accelerated development projects across the state.
Zulum Appreciates Tinubu for Supporting Borno’s Recovery
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the two strategic road projects alongside other developmental interventions in Borno State.
He described the projects as another demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding communities affected by insurgency and restoring economic activities across the North-East.
Governor Zulum reiterated that his administration remains committed to investing in critical infrastructure, including roads, schools, healthcare facilities, water supply projects, and other essential public services aimed at improving the quality of life of residents.
He also assured that the state government would closely monitor the execution of the projects to ensure quality workmanship, transparency, and value for public funds.
Federal Government to Deliver Projects in Phases
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, disclosed that both road projects would be executed in two phases.
He expressed confidence that construction would progress rapidly and assured stakeholders that the Federal Government remains committed to delivering durable road infrastructure that meets international standards.
Dangote Foundation Recognised for Humanitarian Support
Governor Zulum acknowledged the humanitarian contributions of Alhaji Aliko Dangote through the Aliko Dangote Foundation during periods of humanitarian crises in Borno State.
He highlighted the construction of Dangote Village, financial donations for flood victims, support through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the distribution of food and relief materials to internally displaced persons.
According to the governor, these interventions significantly complemented government efforts in supporting vulnerable communities during difficult periods.
