Zulum Strengthens Global Partnerships for Borno’s Recovery
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening international cooperation aimed at accelerating peace, humanitarian recovery, and sustainable development in the state.
Governor Zulum held a high-level closed-door meeting on Friday with senior representatives of the United Nations, the United Kingdom, the United States, the European Union, Switzerland, and other key development partners at the British High Commission in Abuja.
The strategic engagement underscored the continued collaboration between the Borno State Government and the international community in addressing the long-term consequences of insurgency while building resilient communities across the state.
Top Diplomats and Development Partners Attend
Among the distinguished participants were the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall; the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery; the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS,
Gautier Mignot; the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Patrick Egloff; and the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, Keith Heffern.
Also present were Abigail Wood, First Secretary (Humanitarian), and Steven Robinson, First Secretary (Lake Chad Basin), both representing the British High Commission.
Governor Zulum was accompanied by the Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Malumbe, and the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana.
Focus on Peace, Recovery and Sustainable Development
Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, the meeting forms part of ongoing consultations designed to strengthen international support for Borno State’s post-conflict recovery programme.
The discussions are believed to have focused on humanitarian assistance, community stabilization, healthcare delivery, education, livelihood restoration, infrastructure development, food security, and strategies for ensuring lasting peace in communities affected by years of insurgency.
The engagement also reflects the growing importance of coordinated partnerships between governments and international organizations in addressing complex humanitarian and development challenges in Nigeria’s North-East region.
Zulum’s Commitment to International Collaboration
Since assuming office, Governor Zulum has maintained strong working relationships with the United Nations and various international development agencies, leveraging these partnerships to improve the living conditions of displaced persons, rebuild destroyed communities, expand access to quality education, strengthen healthcare services, and promote economic recovery.
His administration has consistently emphasized that sustainable peace requires not only improved security but also investments in human capital development, social services, agriculture, infrastructure, and job creation.
Through these partnerships, thousands of internally displaced persons have returned to reconstructed communities, while numerous schools, hospitals, roads, water projects, and livelihood programmes have been implemented across Borno State.

The meeting further demonstrates the confidence of Nigeria’s international partners in Borno State’s recovery efforts and highlights their continued willingness to support initiatives that promote stability and inclusive development.
As Borno continues its transition from humanitarian response to long-term development, sustained collaboration between the state government and global partners is expected to play a crucial role in consolidating peace, improving public services, attracting investment, and creating opportunities for citizens.
